The Peugeot 405 is a large family car released by the France automaker Peugeot in 1987 and which continues to be manufactured under license outside France. The 405 was voted European Car of the Year in 1988.

Design and styling It has been available in left-hand and right-hand-drive versions, as a saloon and station wagon, in front-wheel, and four-wheel drive. Designed by Pininfarina.

Production and markets About 2.5 million vehicles have been sold worldwide. It slotted into the Peugeot range between the smaller 309 and the larger 505, giving it a firm rival for the Ford Sierra and Vauxhall Cavalier/Opel Vectra.

The 405 was the last Peugeot vehicle sold in the US, the company withdrawing in 1991.

Iranian variants Iran Khodro also produces several models derived from the 405. The Peugeot Pars, also known as the Peugeot Persia, is a facelifted 405 with a redesigned front end including clear lens headlights and a more modern rear end. The Peugeot RD is a rear wheel drive car which has a 405 body and mechanical parts from the Paykan. Since 2006, it has been sold in certain Middle Eastern markets as the Peugeot Roa.

The Samand, which was designed to be a 'national car' for Iran, is also based on the 405 platform.

Faults Recovered:Iran's government is looking into the possibility of claiming compensation from the French auto maker Peugeot due to a large number of its 405 model catching fire and subsequently killing around 150 people, reported the Iran Daily. It is believed the fires were caused by a fault in the vehicle's fuel system. The Peugeot 405 is manufactured locally, under licence, by Iran Khodro; the story first appeared last December.

Motorsport The most famous motorsport version of the 405, the rallying 405 Turbo 16 GR, was very different from the road-going 405. It was built in a coupe body style in mid-engine configuration, had constant four wheel drive with electronically-adjustable center differential like the Peugeot 205 T16, as it was based on the same technology. Only two examples were made, one raced hill climbs and the other competed in the Paris-Dakar rally. Today, one is in the official Peugeot museum, and the other is in a private collection.

Racing 405s much closer in specification to the road-going models were campaigned for several years in European touring car racing during the early to mid 1990s, most notably in the British Touring Car Championship and the French Supertourisme Championship. In Britain, the 405 did not achieve much success, but the car won the French series in both 1994 and 1995, in the hands of Laurent Aïello.

Climb Dance short film A famous short film, titled Climb Dance was produced by Peugeot and directed by Jean Louis Mourey. It shows the 405 Turbo 16 GR competing at the Pikes Peak International Hillclimb.

Peugeot 405 in the UK United Kingdom sales of the Peugeot 405 began in January 1988, with the four-door saloon being the only model initially available. It was aimed at buyers of market leading products such as the Ford Sierra, Vauxhall Cavalier and Austin Montego. Its first year on sale brought mediocre sales, as it failed to make the top 20 of 1988's car sales figures. Sales boomed following the launch of an estate car at the beginning of 1989, and by 1991 it was the ninth best selling car in Britain. Saloon production finished in the autumn of 1995 on the launch of the Peugeot 406, but the eight-year-old 405 was still selling strongly. The estate remained in production for a year, and a few R-registered models (August 1997 to July 1998) were sold. At least one P-registered 405 saloon was sold, and is currently owned by a motorist in Tipton, West Midlands.

More than a decade after its demise, the 405 is still a common sight on Britain's roads, with diesel versions having particularly good survival rates.
